Why I am not a big fan of Dashain ?

Dashain is the greatest and probably the most popular festival in Nepal. Nepalese People from different corners of the world come just to meet their families and accept the offerings & blessings on this propitious occasion. They cherish with each other. Dashain is also probably the oldest festival celebrated in the human history. And it brings a smile in millions of people in Nepal. Dashain is also probably the oldest festival celebrated in the human history. And it brings a smile in millions of people in Nepal. Although this festival is a Hindu-Festival, I have seen other religions celebrating with their family too. They may not celebrate by putting TIKA but they acknowledge with each other via different means like drinking wines or beer together, playing cards, having an awesome family dinner, and many more.

When I was a child, I was the biggest fan of this festival. I loved this festival not because it was an auspicious festival but because of varied reasons. It did make me skip away from boring studies for almost a month; I got a chance to wear brand new clothes, I could fly kites with my friends, and the last but not least I used to own my own money. The biggest sum of money I would have throughout the year would be on Dashain. And I don’t forget a great bamboo swing too. It was always a Fun, Fun, and Fun !! I really miss those days. Even after the festival ended, I used to count the days on my fingers for those moments to begin again.

So what about NOW ? Why I hate Dashain ? What changed ? Why am I not so enthusiastic about Dashain as before? As I grew up , I slowly began to realize how it really worked. My whole life was a lie!! I still love the festival but the great animal sacrifices that are being ruthlessly slaughtered just in the name of the “HOLY GOD” ? Just wasn’t my type. It also may be the reason that I love animals more than FALSE God. As a child, I thought this festival was made for juveniles only. But I was badly deceived.

Ok, now let’s go to the part how this festival is honored. The festival, Dashain, is celebrated for 10 continuous days throughout the country.

Day 1-6 – Ghatasthapana :

This is marked as the beginning of the Dashain. People worship Goddess Durga placing holy water in a pot and covering it with cow dung.  A cow is regarded as a goddess Laxmi in Hindu society. Ghatasthapana Lasts for Six Days.

Day 7 – Fulpati :

This is a major celebration event. Thousands of people along with national army gather in the place “Tundikhel” to celebrate this event. In past, there used to be a grand celebration by the king.

Day 8 – Maha Asthami:

I think this day probably is the reason behind why I feel animosity toward this festival. Millions of animals like goats, chickens, buffaloes, ducks are sacrificed just for a blood in thousands of temples in Nepal. People have a fake believe that Blood-Thirsty goddess Kali will appear and drink the sacrificed blood. If there exists a god, how can he/she allow people to kill those innocent souls ?How come these animals are different from a Cow ? These offerings seem to be auspicious but nor for me now. I do like meets but ending the utmost race of the animal ? A big fat NO !! I am hoping for a day that Aliens would invade the planet and end the humanity race entirely. I hope I would see that day by myself and have a peaceful death.

Day 9 – Maha Navami:

This is a great Ninth day for Hindus. This day is also called Maha Navami. On this day, the forbidden Taleju gates are opened for the general public. This temple is filled with thousands of devotees all day long.

Day 10 – Vijaya Dashami:

The tenth and the final day of the Dashain begins here. On this day, elders put Tika ( the mixture of rice, yoghurt, and vermilion)  on the forehead and Jamara to the younger relatives/families, and give blessings to them. After Tika, elders give Dakshina (money) as a gift with a blessing.

I am not personally against the festival, but the way innumerable animals are sacrificed just makes me feel extremely hyper. The rest part is awesome. I do like how Nepalese families are finally together just because of this occasion. If there was no Dashain, probably the  I do like the brittle smiles on the face of young boys and girls. I do like making some bucks by winning on cards. But slaughtering the helpless and voiceless animals and rotting them to die in the name of almighty lord just make the festival violent. But slaughtering the helpless and voiceless animals and rotting them to die in the name of almighty lord just make the festival violent. I still wonder why PETA ASIA hasn’t done anything about this. Due to these reasons, I sometimes have a strong urge to kill people. I do love meat, though. Probably I should start eating human flesh too. 😛

So, let’s unite together and say no to Animal Sacrifices. Many developed countries have already ended their historic rituals and offerings. Why can’t we ?
